O.k., so I'm looking into another project and a GPS seems like a great idea. I was going to get a TomTom One model GPS and wanted to know if anybody knows how to hardwire this to my car. I don't want this to take up a cigarette lighter and would like to have this looking professional.
Please don't reply saying TomTom blows or anything, just if you know the process because I doubt it'll be as easy as a neon installation.

Take the ciggy plug from the GPS apart and see what size fuse is in it, then just run a fused line with that size fuse in it to the 12+ side of the GPS power cord, ground the other side and you're done...

idk if thats right, i was looking on randoms sites and the people were saying the cigarette lighter was a voltage regulator/capacitor thing.
Being the only reason i wanted to know if somebody has personally done it, or at very least where to get it done, possibly with a warranty

Best Buy does it. Circuit City used to do it before they collapsed lol any audio shop might do it for cheaper than Best Buy though..

i just don't like having other people do it, mainly because if i do it, i'll know how its done and it'll be done perfectly to my liking
i probably am going to have to get them to do it then, do you know anything about a warranty. I know i'll prob have to buy it from them to get it done.

yeah ok, so i was doing some thinking about how to do this and i've thought out a plan, so after i explain tell me what you think
The kit comes with a cigarette lighter adapter right? well if i open this cigarette lighter adapter up to get inside, and if there's a sort of resistor then somewhere on that it has to connect a positive and ground to the adapter itself right? well, couldn't i just take my soldering iron and melt the soldier holding the wires connected to the resistor . After words I would take longer wires and attach to my radio fuse and ground it out with a stock screw. Adding the positive to my radio so that it starts charging when my car is turned on.
So when I get finally get this TomTom and if it does have a resistor built into the cig lighter, i would be able to keep that, just basically lengthen the wires from the resistor to my connection source
Does these seem as logical to yall as it does to me, or in some way could i mess up the resistor

I'd get something like this: www.sailgb.com/p/12v_auxiliary_power_socket/Mount the socket under your dash, run power and ground to it, fuse it, add a relay so it only turns on when the ignition is on. Then just plug your TomTom into the socket. This way you don't ruin the TomTom cord and you don't have to worry about what electrical components are in the TomTom 12v adapter.

Also just a tidbit of info. Sometimes cutting off the cig plug will void your warranty. I had a Whelen light and the company i bought it from said do NOT cut the plug or your warranty is no good so im assuming that the same can be said about a GPS unit so maybe OT's idea is a good one.
